If your PC is acting strangely, running slowly, or bombarding you with pop-ups, you may have a virus. Malware and viruses can slow down performance, steal personal information, and even make your device unusable. So, how do you get rid of them?

This guide will walk you through step-by-step instructions to remove a virus from your computer. And if you need expert assistance, Wolf Pack Technology is here to help—whether you’re unsure about the process or your PC needs professional repair.

1. Disconnect from the Internet

To prevent the virus from spreading or communicating with hackers, disconnect your PC from Wi-Fi or Ethernet immediately.

  1. Unplug your Ethernet cable if connected.
  2. Turn off Wi-Fi by going to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi and disabling it.

This step stops further damage while you remove the virus.

2. Boot into Safe Mode

Safe Mode starts your PC with only essential functions, preventing the virus from running in the background.

  1. Restart your PC and press F8 (on older systems) or hold Shift + Restart from the Start menu.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings and select Safe Mode with Networking (only if you need to download tools).

3. Run a Full Virus Scan

Use Windows Defender or a trusted third-party antivirus to detect and remove the virus.

  1. Open Windows Security by searching for it in the Start menu.
  2. Click Virus & Threat Protection > Scan Options.
  3. Select Full Scan and hit Scan Now.

If threats are found, follow the prompts to remove them.

4. Use Malware Removal Tools

Some stubborn malware might not be detected by your antivirus. Try these additional tools:

  • Malwarebytes – A powerful malware scanner (Download from Malwarebytes).
  • Microsoft Safety Scanner – A free tool from Microsoft (Download Here).

After scanning, restart your computer and check if the problem persists.

5. Uninstall Suspicious Programs

Viruses often install unwanted programs.

  1. Go to Control Panel > Programs & Features.
  2. Look for suspicious or unknown software.
  3. Click Uninstall and remove anything that looks out of place.

If you’re unsure about a program, Google it before deleting.

6. Clear Browser Data & Reset Your Browser

Some viruses alter your browser settings. Resetting your browser removes harmful extensions and restores normal function.

For Google Chrome:

  1. Go to Settings > Reset Settings.
  2. Click Restore settings to their original defaults.
  3. Hit Reset Settings.

Repeat for other browsers like Firefox or Edge.

7. Will System Restore Remove Viruses?

System Restore can undo recent changes to your system, but it may not remove deep-rooted viruses. If the malware is embedded in your files, it can still remain after a restore.

To try System Restore:

  1. Search for Create a Restore Point in the Start menu.
  2. Click System Restore and follow the instructions to revert to a previous state.

If the virus is still present after a restore, you’ll need stronger removal methods.

8. Will a Factory Reset Remove Viruses?

A factory reset can remove most viruses, but it also wipes everything else from your PC, including files and programs.

To Factory Reset Your PC:

  1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  2. Click Reset this PC and choose Remove Everything.

🔴 WARNING: This erases all personal data! Be sure to back up important files before performing a reset.
